SECTION 03
The Workshop
A workshop is a division of labour before it is a style. These entries follow the hierarchy of the shop: whose hand was purchased, what an assistant was allowed to finish, and how a full-size drawing made repetition possible.
- The Master's Own HandContracts routinely specified which parts the master had to paint himself. Why that clause existed, and what it tells us about how a workshop actually divided a picture.
- What an Assistant Was Allowed to PaintDrapery, background, architecture — the hierarchy of the workshop written into the surface.
- The Cartoon and the PounceFull-size drawings transferred by pricked outline and charcoal dust. Repeatability as a workshop technology.
- A Painter Retained by the MonthSalaried arrangements rather than per-commission. What that changed about the work.
